The Logic
of Designing

This research delves into the logic of designing as a logic of information from a practical application perspective. It explores the type of knowledge involved in practical designing, how this knowledge operates, and how it can be methodologically utilized and scientifically connected.

Designresearch, Philosophy of Information

Since the a priori scientific perspective couldn't access the functioning of this shaping knowledge, this study adopts an a posteriori approach. The hypothesis is that in visual communication, there are two distinct "states" of information quality: tangible form as comprehensible information that communicates from within, and intangible, so-called non-informative information that defines a matter from various perspectives and operates externally.

In the practical research field of Las Vegas, the epistemic logic of design – "designing as researching" – was methodically applied to reveal the effects of these information qualities in the atmospheric-visual context of hotel-casino resorts. It was found that a data triangulation of both information qualities occurs, explaining the transformative creative processes through which novelty arises. Using a self-developed method, the effects of visual communication of floor patterns concerning human movement in space and time were evaluated. Floor patterns directly influence physical movement, determining the speed, pace, and purposefulness of visitors.

The findings shed light on a more specific handling of information qualities and demonstrate that the logic of design can be integrated as an independent knowledge practice within the scientific context.
